Common No-Start Issues, Cold Starting Tips & Troubleshooting
If your Johnson or Evinrude outboard won't start, cranks slowly, or struggles during cold starts, you're not alone.
At Next Level Marine, we regularly diagnose older Johnson and Evinrude outboards throughout Bradenton, Palmetto, Ellenton, and surrounding Gulf Coast marinas.
Most starting problems on Johnson and Evinrude engines come down to a few common issues:
Weak batteries
Corroded electrical connections
Fuel delivery problems
Flooding
Stale ethanol fuel
Choke or primer issues
The good news is many of these problems can be identified quickly before major repairs are needed.
Why Johnson & Evinrude Outboards Struggle to Start
Cold weather, long storage periods, and marine corrosion are some of the biggest causes of hard-starting outboards.
Common Reasons These Outboards Won't Start
Weak battery voltage
Corroded terminals
Flooded engine
Dirty carburetors
Bad fuel
Fuel system air leaks
Neutral safety switch problems
Worn starter solenoids
Choke system issues
Older 2-stroke Johnson and Evinrude engines are especially sensitive to fuel quality and proper starting procedures.
First Things To Check Before Starting
Before turning the key, start with the basics.
Quick No-Start Checklist
Verify fuel level
Open the fuel tank vent
Attach the kill switch lanyard
Make sure the engine is fully in neutral
Pump the primer bulb until firm
Check battery voltage
Inspect battery terminals for corrosion
Low voltage and poor cable connections are extremely common causes of slow cranking and no-start conditions.
How To Cold Start a Johnson or Evinrude Outboard
Cold starts can be difficult on older carbureted outboards if the fuel mixture or choke settings are incorrect.
Recommended Cold Start Procedure
1. Prime the Fuel System
Pump the primer bulb until it becomes firm. Do not continue pumping after the bulb firms up, as over-priming can flood the engine.
2. Advance the Throttle Slightly
Move the throttle forward slightly to increase airflow during startup. Older 2-stroke outboards typically need a richer mixture during cold starts.
3. Engage the Choke
Use full choke on a cold engine. Depending on the model:
Pull the ignition key outward
Use a choke lever
Engage the primer system
4. Crank in Short Intervals
Crank the engine for 5–10 seconds maximum. Allow the starter to cool briefly between attempts to avoid overheating the starter motor or damaging electrical components.
5. Reduce Choke Gradually
Once the engine starts, slowly reduce choke and allow the engine to warm up. Let the idle stabilize before shifting into gear. Most Johnson and Evinrude engines need a few minutes of warm-up time before running smoothly.
Common Johnson & Evinrude Starting Problems

Flooded Engine
Flooding is one of the most common hard-start problems we see.
Signs of Flooding
Strong fuel smell
Wet spark plugs
Engine sputters but won't fire
Excessive smoke
How To Clear a Flooded Outboard
Disengage choke
Open throttle fully
Crank briefly to clear excess fuel
If flooding continues, inspect carburetors, needle valves, choke linkage, and fuel delivery components.
Battery & Electrical Problems
Electrical issues are another leading cause of no-start conditions.
Common Electrical Problems
Corroded battery terminals
Weak batteries
Bad starter solenoids
Loose grounds
Voltage drop
Blown fuses
If you hear a single click — suspect a weak battery or bad solenoid. Slow crank points to corrosion or low voltage. No crank at all suggests an electrical interruption or safety switch issue.
Saltwater corrosion can quickly create resistance in battery cables and starter circuits.
Fuel System Problems
Fuel delivery issues are extremely common on older Johnson and Evinrude outboards.
Common Fuel Problems
Stale ethanol fuel
Water contamination
Clogged fuel filters
Dirty carburetors
Cracked fuel lines
Weak fuel pumps
Ethanol-blended fuel can begin breaking down quickly in marine environments, especially if the boat sits unused. Learn more about ethanol fuel on the official BoatUS Ethanol Fuel Guide.
Signs of a Bad Fuel Pump
A failing fuel pump may cause:
Hard starting
Rough idle
Poor acceleration
Fuel starvation
Engine stalling
Excessive fuel consumption
At Next Level Marine, fuel system cleaning and diagnostics are some of the most common repairs we perform on older 2-stroke outboards.
Carburetor Problems on Older 2-Strokes
Many Johnson and Evinrude starting problems come from dirty or partially clogged carburetors.
Common Carburetor Symptoms
Hard cold starts
Rough idle
Hesitation
Engine sneezing or coughing
Poor throttle response
Carburetor cleaning and rebuilding often restore reliable cold starting and smoother operation.
Ignition System Problems
If the engine cranks but will not fire, ignition issues may be the cause.
Common Ignition Problems
Fouled spark plugs
Weak spark
Corroded ignition wires
Failing coils
Salt buildup on electrical components
Start by checking spark plug condition, spark strength, plug wire corrosion, and coil resistance. Weak spark is one of the leading causes of hard starting on older outboards.
Preventative Maintenance for Johnson & Evinrude Outboards
Routine maintenance helps prevent most starting problems before they happen.
Recommended Maintenance
Replace spark plugs annually
Service carburetors regularly
Replace fuel filters
Inspect fuel lines
Use marine fuel stabilizer
Keep batteries fully charged
Clean electrical connections
Flush cooling systems after use
Preventative maintenance is especially important for older carbureted 2-stroke engines. Learn more about the routine maintenance we recommend at Next Level Marine.
How Long Do Johnson & Evinrude Outboards Last?
Many Johnson and Evinrude outboards are still running reliably decades later with proper maintenance.
Engine lifespan depends heavily on:
Fuel quality
Maintenance history
Cooling system condition
Corrosion prevention
Proper storage
Well-maintained engines can continue operating reliably for many years. Still have questions? You can always visit the BRP Official Support Page or find more about Evinrude Owner Resources to learn more.
